Rapid7 Q3 2026: ransomware signals and a three-day exploitation window

A careful reading of The Gentlemen and Qilin leak-site data and CVE exploitation speed in Rapid7's Q3 2026 report, without turning claims into confirmed incidents.

Rapid7's report page, PDF and official 21 October 2026 summary were checked. Verified applies to Rapid7's publication, methodology and the cited figures. Ransomware.VN has not independently confirmed each leak-site listing, each named organization or the number of real-world incidents. The report does not provide a qualifying Vietnam-specific count.

All three sources are published by Rapid7 and are not three independent confirmations. Victim listing, leak-site listing and claim refer to a threat actor's statement or a collected leak-site record, not proof that an organization was compromised. Rankings and percentages are bounded by Rapid7's Q3 2026 dataset and methodology. Artwork is editorial illustration, not a map or incident evidence.

Evidence / published sources

Rapid7 says its Q3 2026 report combines observations from MDR services, vulnerability intelligence, threat research, ransomware leak sites and underground forums. Those sources have different visibility, so the figures describe what Rapid7 observed during the quarter rather than every ransomware incident worldwide.

Evidence / published sources

In the Q3 2026 leak-site dataset, Rapid7 recorded 342 listings for The Gentlemen, 339 for Qilin and 99 for Inc. The United States had 1,112 listings, roughly eight times Germany in the same dataset. These are group-published or collected listings, not organizations independently confirmed by Ransomware.VN as compromised.

Business services, manufacturing and healthcare also appeared among the most represented sectors. Global proportions should not be used to infer a Vietnamese victim profile when the source does not provide a sufficiently defined Vietnam sample.

Evidence / published sources

Rapid7 tracked 43 newly exploited high- or critical-severity CVEs in Q3. Median time from public disclosure to exploitation was three days; 71% were exploited within seven days, 80% within 14 days and 90% within 30 days.

The report says 79% of the 43 high-value flaws required neither authentication nor user interaction. This describes Rapid7's tracked CVE set, not the probability that any arbitrary CVE will be exploited.

Evidence / published sources

Of 63 underground-market posts tracked by Rapid7, 41 offered access for sale, with RDP and network presence among the referenced forms. These are observations of posts, not proof that every offered access remained valid, was sold or led to encryption.

Technical assessment
  • Rank internet-facing assets by evidence of exploitation, authentication requirements and business impact; do not wait for a monthly patch cycle when active exploitation is supported by evidence.
  • Prioritize VPNs, firewalls, RDP, remote-management systems and paths to backup infrastructure. Preserve and compare logs before and after changes.
  • Separate three questions: is the flaw present, is there evidence of exploitation, and was ransomware actually deployed? One positive answer does not establish the other two.
  • Maintain isolated backups, test recovery and document visibility gaps. A short exploitation window raises the value of early detection and rehearsed recovery.
Technical assessment

Ransomware.VN has not reviewed raw data, samples, logs or confirmations from each organization behind the leak-site listings. This report does not support naming a specific Vietnamese organization as attacked, ranking groups within Vietnam or calculating domestic losses.

The report's main operational value is prioritization: disclosure-to-exploitation time is short, while leak-site counts must remain threat-actor claims until independently corroborated.
